The main force of the Greek armada were hoplites. These soldiers were armed with a long spear, short bronze sword, and circular bronze shield. If the man could afford it he was protected by a bronze helmet, breastplate, greaves, and ankle guards. Their strategy was to fight up close. Eventually for greater mobility, hoplites started to wear lighter armor such as an open-faced helmet and leather or laminated linen corselet. The Persian forces were more assorted, with archers and cavalry and foot soldiers oh my! The usual foot soldier was not as well equipped as a Greek hoplite, they used a cloth hat, wicker shield, iron scales under a tunic, a bow, a short spear, and a dagger. They utilized cavalry much more than the Greeks. Men on horseback had similar gear to the foot soldiers but with better headgear. But the most feared Persian force were the Immortals. They say that if you struck one down he would instantly be replaced with another, giving the illusion of immortality. They wear heavily armored and armed.
