Hi guys! As you can tell from the title, I might not be uploading any more posts on this blog. I'm going to hopefully be creating a few more websites, and I'll notify you if anything happens. Anyways, I am going to quickly recap on my last posts. In my first post, I talked about some of the winning factors in the battle of Plataea. My second post was about the fighting styles and weaponry of the two armies. If you recall, the Greeks focused on heavily armored hoplites, while the Persians had lighter troops. In my third post, I talked about the commanding officers in the battle. I chose this topic for my blog because I wanted to do something to do with the persian wars, so why not the final major battle? I enjoyed the chance to learn about one of my favorite ancient civilizations. This was an awesome experience for me and hopefully, for you too!
My sources are Sarissa.org, Legendsandchronicles.com, and Ancient.eu The main force of the Greek armada were hoplites. These soldiers were armed with a long spear, short bronze sword, and circular bronze shield. If the man could afford it he was protected by a bronze helmet, breastplate, greaves, and ankle guards. Their strategy was to fight up close. Eventually for greater mobility, hoplites started to wear lighter armor such as an open-faced helmet and leather or laminated linen corselet. The Persian forces were more assorted, with archers and cavalry and foot soldiers oh my! The usual foot soldier was not as well equipped as a Greek hoplite, they used a cloth hat, wicker shield, iron scales under a tunic, a bow, a short spear, and a dagger. They utilized cavalry much more than the Greeks. Men on horseback had similar gear to the foot soldiers but with better headgear. But the most feared Persian force were the Immortals. They say that if you struck one down he would instantly be replaced with another, giving the illusion of immortality. They wear heavily armored and armed.
I have always wanted to learn more about the Persian Wars, but never had the chance. Once sixth grade rolled around I got my chance. All I knew before was that the movie 300 was in the Persian Wars. I was excited for the chance to learn about my favorite topics I knew nothing about. I hope to learn about the wining factors and strategies in the battle of Plataea. I guess this will be a new experience for both of us. ;)
